1) Class Benches

From Mr Yeow:

Dear students,

We have observed that the void decks at the Left and Right Wings are usually left in a very messy state with litters everywhere in the early morning and late afternoon. This unsightly view is a real eyesore to both staffs and students. Furthermore, the cleaners are really having a hard time maintaining the cleanliness of these void decks.

As such, the school is open to suggestions on how the student body can help maintain the cleanliness of the void decks. We will also like you to propose deterring measures (penalty or punishments) to help deter students from messing up the class benches.

Every CT class must submit a proposal on a piece of A4 size paper and all suggestions will be kept confidential. I will be collecting these proposals from you by next week. Please pass the message around.

Regards
Ken Yeow
EC Discipline

---

Please post your suggestions/comments on the tagboard (if you are bored).

I think it's impossible to implement measures to keep the class benches clean as you can't stop people from moving around and to other class benches. (We may have stuff on our class bench that does not belong to anyone of us at all, etc.) And I don't think the school will go to the extent of looking at security camera footage to punish students who mess up the class benches. I believe everyone already knows what to do and this is unnecessary.

Peacekeeping

"Paul Collier's new rules for rebuilding a broken nation"

Found some useful information for INT History (Peacekeeping) and suggestions on post-conflict recovery.

---

Key points:
- Security Council needs to focus on long term measures
- Economic reform is essential
- Need to collaborate with other organizations to achieve recovery and peacekeeping (Interdependence)
- Peace building Commission (PBC) [Also mentioned in page 6 of 'Collective Security' notes]
=> come up with standard set of norms and build mutual commitments between parties

* Jobs, Basic Services (Health), 'Clean' Government

[Generate Jobs]
=> Regain competitiveness in international trade
=> Reconstruction of infrastructure destroyed by conflict

[Basic Services]
=> Is it enough to just fund the NGOs? (Limitations of NGOs)
=> NGOs need to be more accountable
=> Over-reliance on foreign aid

['Clean' Government]
=> Corrupt government may hinder recovery
=> Scrutiny and transparency needed in handling of money

[Goal]
Economic recovery (increase in employment rate) -> security + reconstruction of infrastructure
Politics of plunder -> politics of hope

Economics

Extra Notes (for Mrs Long's tutorial class)

Introduction:
  • State that whether Fed's action to raise interest rates to curb inflation will succeed depends on the causes of inflation and the responsiveness of C and I to the higher interest rates.
Body:

[Demand-pull inflation]
  • Explain how increases in interest rates can reduce C and I and thus lower demand-pull inflation
  • Examine the effectiveness of such a policy by considering:
  1. Slope of the LP curve and the interest elasticity of C and MEI
  2. Relative significance of the other determinants of C such as income, expectations of consumers etc and other determinants of I such as business sentiments
  3. Depending on the k effect - US MPC is high so k should be large
  • Suggest the use of contractionary fiscal policies advocated by Keynesians

[Cost-push inflation]
  • If the inflation is the cost-push type, increase in interest rates would be ineffective in controlling inflation.
  • Briefly mention the types of cost-push inflation (wage-push, profit-push and import-price-push.)
  • Suggest methods of tackling cost-push inflation such as reducing the power of the trade unions, increase labour productivity, introducing wage ceiling, reducing dependence on imported goods & raw materials by looking for cheaper substitutes or appreciating the exchange rate (not likely), and regulating the monopolies.
